Gloria Marie Steinem is an American feminist journalist and social policy activist who is recognized nationally as the leader and spokesperson for the American feminist movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Steinem was a columnist for New York magazine and co-founder of the magazine Ms. In 1969, Steinem published an article, “After Black Power, Women's Liberation,” which made her a prominent national feminist leader. In 1971, she co-founded the National Women's Political Organization, which trains and helps women seek elected and appointed positions in government. Also in 1971, she co-founded the Women's Action Coalition which, until 1997, supported the network of feminists and worked to promote feminist principles and legislation. In the 1990s, Steinem helped found the Girls Work Festival, an opportunity for young girls to learn about future career opportunities.
