Man found with gunshot wound in Brentwood sports centre car park

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a shooting in a car park outside a boxing match in Essex overnight.

The victim, a man in his 30s from London, was shot in the shoulder in the gun attack.

Witnesses said three shots rang out across the car park of Brentwood sports centre car park just before midnight on Saturday, sending those leaving the boxing match running for cover.

Police rushed the man to hospital with one witness telling the Sun Online: "(They) just heard three gun shots then everyone went running in all directions to try and get away".

Police have now taped off the area, with forensics called in to examine the scene.

The confrontation, which unfolded in the car park of the Brentwood Centre in Doddinghurst Road, sparked a police investigation.

A 32 year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

Detective Superintendent Stuart Hooper, of the Essex and Kent Serious Crime Directorate, said: "We would like to speak to anyone who was at or near the Brentwood Centre.

"The venue was very busy during this time due to a sporting event taking place there and someone will have seen something that will help this investigation."

Police are now hopeful they would be able to speak to any witnesses who had caught the shooting on camera.

Detective Superintendent Hooper said: "We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who attended the venue and has dashcam video footage in their car.

"I believe this was an isolated incident and don’t believe there is any risk to the wider public."

Brentwood Centre released a notice on their website, saying: "Dear customer, Due to an incident last night, please enter the Brentwood Centre via the pool viewing entrance for sports usage. Thank you for your cooperation."

Police have urged anyone with information to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or to contact the Essex and Kent Serious Crime Directorate on 101 quoting incident 50 of 19/02.
